The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the rules are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
