Lifetime of Income Insufficient for UK Employees to Enter Richest 10%, Study Says

Based on fresh study, the typical employee in the UK would have to work over five decades of salary to reach the financial standing of the richest 10% of the population.

Widening Wealth Gap Through the Years

The study reviewed net worth data including the 2020-22 timeframe and found that in the mid-2000s, it would have required nearly four decades of typical employment income to reach the wealthiest decile of the financial hierarchy.

A senior economist involved with the report commented: "Financial divides in Britain are now so large that a average worker saving all their earnings across their entire working life would continue to be incapable to reach the top of the economic scale."

Measuring the Financial Disparity

The study found that the disparity between the assets of the median citizen and a person belonging to the richest segment was £1m in 2006-08, but had expanded to 1.3 million pounds in inflation-adjusted terms by 2020-22.

The economist continued: "These differences are doubly concerning as wealth mobility in Britain is low – individuals who begin life wealthy tend to remain affluent, and the opposite holds true."

Comparative Financial Divide

Although the economic divide expanding in specific figures, the share of overall assets in the UK owned by the wealthiest families – known as "relative wealth inequality" – has been "mostly consistent since the 1980s era," as stated in the study.

Throughout these years, complete net worth in the UK increased dramatically from thrice the annual GDP, to approximately 7.5x.

Drivers of Financial Divide

Termed "unearned" gains, via growing real estate costs and changes in superannuation evaluations, were the main drivers of the widening wealth gap from 2010 onward, per the study.

These increases tended to accrue to older, property-owning households, the analysis reveals – exacerbating the generational financial disparity.

Intergenerational Wealth Disparities

The typical financial disparity between people in their early 30s and people aged 60-64 more than doubled in real terms, from £135k in the mid-2000s, to £310,000.

Geographic Variations

There were also significant geographic differences, with the average level of wealth in 2020-22 amounting to 290 thousand pounds in the southeastern region, where real estate values have generally grown substantially, versus 110 thousand pounds in the northeastern region.

COVID Era Effects

During the pandemic, when countless laborers were protected by the taxpayer-backed furlough scheme, and health crisis restrictions curtailed consumption options, the information reveals numerous families were capable of accumulating, enhancing their financial standing.

Wealthier families achieved superior outcomes, however. "The average household in the bottom income bracket saw their cash reserves grow by only eighty pounds during the COVID years (2019-20 to 2021-22), broadly the same as the 24 months before COVID. In contrast, the median home in the wealthiest fifth saw their cash reserves increase by £4,200," the study reveals.
