No fewer than 13 people lose their lives and 98 hurt in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.
A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” stated the national leader.
The official reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose term concluded the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's economic vision for the southern region.
Another massive train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The building of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in national projects. They were executed at an rapid speed, surpassing expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked ongoing questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a full technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."
In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in complete adherence to all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and running of these national undertakings.
