Senate Passes Legislation to Disclose Epstein Files
The Senate on this Tuesday gave swift approval to a bill that will force the release of case documents related to the late pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, after a near-unanimous vote in the House of Representatives and a shift by Donald Trump and his GOP allies. The administration gave in after an extended period of trying to forestall the cross-party initiative involving a scandal that has followed the president since his return to the White House.
Expedited Passage in Congress
Senators proceeded by consensus, which requires approval from each senator but avoids a recorded vote, accelerating the process. Hours earlier, the House overwhelmingly approved the bill on a massive majority.
The public have been patient long enough. The survivors have waited long enough,” the top Senate Democrat declared in a Senate remarks on Tuesday, before asking the chamber to approve it without opposition. “Let the truth come out. Let transparency reign.”
Future Action
The measure next will be sent to the president for his signature. Trump stated on Monday that he would approve the bill.
Even though Trump has for months downplayed the controversy over the official management of the Epstein case as a “false narrative”, he voiced approval for the House bill over the past few days, and said he would approve it if it comes to him.
Support and Opposition
Opposition lawmakers, along with victims and their advocates who were watching from a viewing area, cheered after the bill was enacted. Lone dissent came from Clay Higgins, who stated he feared the measure would reveal specific data of individuals involved, those under scrutiny and others involved in the investigation.
